THE SPRING HAS SPRUNG THE GRASS HAS RIZ

I wonder where the boidies is?[i]

. . . Behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.

Song of Solomon 2: 11-12

Springtime! I get excited about flowers and birds, open windows, sitting on the patio, and walking outside in shirtsleeves. As I lay abed after my alarm goes off in the morning, I hear the bird song even in the dark of the hour. The Spring has Sprung, the grass has riz; I KNOW where the boidies is. I enjoy going to the lake and taking a spin around. Lately, a lot of people are fishing. Yesterday I saw a school of baby fish, and soon there will be new goslings and ducklings following their mama geese and ducks. Indeed, the Spring has sprung.

Then there are yard sales. I don’t have those anymore, and I certainly don’t need to go to any and add to my already crowded space. But other people prepare for garage sales in hopes someone else will find good use for what they no longer use or need. There is always stuff that doesn’t make the cut and they end up carting the mess off to the land fill—a mess too terrible for even the recycling facility.

As I think of unwanted things in my personal space, perhaps Spring is a good time to consider unloading some of my bad attitudes, selfish motives, and (yes I admit it) sinful responses and actions.  I don’t need a spiritual garage sale. No one else needs my “bad.” There is no recycling of sinfulness. Those worldly characteristics of mine must be destroyed.

My soul has collected a lot of spiritual junk over Winter, and the debris has overwhelmed my life. I’ve retreated into a spiritual winter. Reawakening is in order. God’s Spirit is always with me, but I bundle Him up in my chilled spirit.

How do I reawaken to a spiritual springtime? So, I’ve been going to church faithfully, reading my Bible, praying, going to small group/Sunday school. Aren’t these enough? Commendable, of course, but how real is my spiritual activity when I’m sitting around the house, running about shopping, going to the gym or park, or schmoozing with my neighbors? Am I not stagnating and holing up with the sameness of a religious exercise, when I should be awakening the character of His Spirit within me and taking it out into the lives of others. Are there unused blessings to share with others? Now’s the time to connect to the world about me with His love. Now’s the time to share the gospel message with others. Now’s the time to invite an unchurched person to join me—say, Easter Sunday.

Wake up! The Spring has sprung!
