THE PURSE LADY

THE PURSE LADY

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your Name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.

Psalm 8: 1

Some ladies have closets filled with shoes. Then, there are the purse people. I like purses to match my wardrobe for the day: little purses, shoulder bags, handbags; black, navy, blue, fuchsia, red, tan—my colors. You know the lady who always carries a big purse. You know if you need something, she’s got it in her purse: headache, and she has acetaminophen; snagged a nail, and she hands you an emery board; spilled something on your favorite top, and she has a laundry pin; picked your finger on a rose thorn, and, yes, she has a band aid; got a run in your nylons, and she says, “Here’s some nail polish;” tears, and she’s got a tissue. Her purse seems bottomless.

Her purse reminds me of the bottomless bounty of God’s Holy Name. Yes, His name is the Name above all names; His name is the Name at which every knee shall bow (Philippians 2: 9-11). As well, the Names of God cover every, and I mean EVERY, human need. When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, do we think about the phrase, “Hallowed be Thy name” as we pray? His Name goes deeper than the deepest purse. According to one Internet article, there are 960 names for God in the Bible. (Check out the link below to review the list.[i])

Just a few …

  • Illness: Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases …
Psalm 103: 2-3 (NKJV)

  • Feeling like you are lost and insignificant: El Roi, the God who sees me

Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?” Genesis 16: 13

  • Think you lack what it takes: El Shaddai, the All-sufficient One, God Almighty

When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless … Genesis 17: 1

  • Worried where the next meal comes from: Jehovah Jireh, the LORD will provide

So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Genesis 22: 14

  • Life in turmoil: Jehovah Shalom, the LORD is peace

Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace. Judges 6: 24

  • Unsure of life’s direction: Jehovah Ra’ah, The LORD is my shepherd.

“The Lord is my Shepherd …”

Psalm 23: 1

  • Caught up in sinful thoughts or actions: Jehovah Hesed, The God of forgiveness

But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them. Nehemiah 9:17

  • Lacking strength: Jehovah Uzzi, The LORD is my strength

 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
and with my song I give thanks to him.
Psalm 28: 7

  • Concerned about what to stand for in a chaotic world: Jehovah Nissi, the LORD is our banner (the measuring standard).

And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner. Exodus 17:15

  • Need someone to confide in to give advice: Abba Father, God, our loving and intimate Father

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” Romans 8:15

  • Grieving or disappointed: Theos pasēs paraklēseōs, The God of all comfort:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (2 Cor. 1:3-4)

No way can we trivialize the God of Creation, He who has given Himself to bring us salvation, who cares for us more deeply than any person. No way can we dismiss a God whose very Name encompasses everything we will ever need.

Challenge: The next time you see a lady who carries a big purse, remember: God is enough. You cannot get along without Him. When the Day of the LORD comes, everyone will bow before Him, even those who have rejected Him, denied His existence, or flaunted Him. Make certain that when that Day of the LORD arrives you will be able to bow before Him in faith.

Prayer: “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name …” Help us to not only claim Your name in faith, but to rely on You for all things, for You have an unfathomable depth to your Name. Thank you, thank you, thank you. In Jesus. Amen
