Davey has been adopted by his true father, Harry Carlin. After a year in Philadelphia, where Carlin teaches the children of well-known botanist, the Quaker, John Bartram, Davey, with his fiddle, and his “Pa” finally are prepared to go to Virginia to homestead on the vast holdings of Lord Thomas Fairfax. Assuming they were done with their foe, Caleb Clark, he once again comes on the scene to create a real-life nightmare for Davey. Along the way to Virginia, they encounter many new friends and, once again, are held up from settling in Virginia. A new character–a woman–reveals some vital information about Davey’s history. Now that they are located in Maryland, the presence of slaves becomes a point of decision for the pair.
